Bristol Emails
Alternative Formats of Canvas Items in a Different Language
This option is good for changing a Canvas item into an alternative format that is translated. For example, you can download a translated PDF version of an assignment.
Step 1:
Locate the Canvas item you want to translate. Click the blue person icon for Alternative Formats

Step 2:
Click Language Translations.

Step 3:
- From the Language drop-down menu, select a desired language to translate the document into.
- Select a translation option according to your desired file type. The options include:
- Translated Source File
- Translated PDF
- Translated Text File
- Translated Gradient Reader
- Translated EPUB (file for book readers.)

Done! You have successfully created an alternative format of the content. ✔️
Translate Canvas Menus and Buttons
(Note! This will not translate course names or course content.)
Step 1:
Log into myBristol and go to Canvas.
Step 2:
- Click "Account".
- A menu appears, click "Settings".
- Click "Edit Settings". (The "Edit Settings" button is located at the bottom of the page or to the right.)

Step 3:
- Near Language, click the drop down menu that says "English (United States)".
- Scroll through the list of languages and choose one. (In the example below "Español (Latinoamérica)" was chosen.)
- Click the "Update Settings" button.

Done! Canvas menus and buttons are a different language. ✔️
Buttons and menus in Spanish, but course name does not change.
Translate Text in Canvas by Highlighting Words
Most text in Canvas is highlightable. When you highlight you can translate the text.
Step 1:
Click the Square icon on the far right of your screen. (It contains a speaker icon with orange sound waves.)

Step 2:
Highlight the text you want to translate. You can use a mouse or trackpad.

Highlighting Text Help:

Highlighting text with a mouse: Bring your curser to beginning of a word or sentence. Left-click on the mouse and hold. Drag your mouse to highlight text.

Highlighting text with a trackpad: With one finger, press down on the trackpad at the beginning of a word or sentence. Drag a different finger across the trackpad to highlight text. If you are having trackpad trouble, watch trackpad basics video (2 minutes):
Step 3:
- A menu will appear, click the "Translate" option.
- A bigger menu will appear. Start typing the name of your language in the search bar. Alternatively, you can scroll through the list to find it.
- Click on the name.

Step 4:
The menu will now change and show you a translation. You can also listen to the translate. Click the play button in the toolbar.

Done! You have translated highlighted text in Canvas. Repeat steps 2-6 when you want translate more text.✔️
Install Translator App in Bristol Email
Step 1:
- In the toolbar that appears above your list of emails, click the square icon that looks like a waffle.
- A menu will appear, click the "Add apps" button.

Step 2:
- A search bar will appear on the left side. Type "translator".
- Click the app called, "Translator for Outlook."

Step 3:
Click the "Add" button.

Step 4:
Click the "Got it" button on the pop-up.

Done! You have installed the translator app. ✔️
Translate Bristol Emails
Step 1:
- Click on an email you want to translate.
- Click the 3 dot menu button in the upper right corner of the email.
- A menu will appear. Click the waffle looking "Apps" option.

Step 2:
- A side panel will appear. Choose your Language by clicking in the "Translate to" area under Translator.
- Click the pin icon. This will keep the translator open.

Done! The translator will stay open and translate the email. Click on different emails to read them in a different language. ✔️
